PLAYMOBIL DIORAMA THE SILK ROAD IN THE AGE OF MARCO POLO

There are some figures that we loved to create but it is not easy to place them in a diorama. The adventures of Marco Polo, we think a very interesting subject, but we are not able to take much advantage of our creations. We would love to make a great Chinese palace, but it is totally out of our possibilities.

Hay algunas figuras que nos ha encantado hacer pero que no es nada fácil colocarlas en un diorama. Las aventuras de Marco Polo, nos parecen un tema muy interesante, pero no estamos en condiciones de sacar mucho provecho de nuestras creaciones. Nos encantaría un gran palacio Chino, pero está totalmente fuera de nuestras posibilidades.

As we wanted to make a diorama, we chose to display a couple of small scenes in which to place our characters without much effort. We have incorporated some other characters to give some sense to the dioramas. In the story (which is not sure to be real) two monks appear who are sent by the Pope along with the Polo brothers to close relations with the great Khan. They turn around shortly after leaving the city of Acre, at the thought of being imprisoned by the Mamluk sultan Baibars. We have preferred that they accompany our protagonists during something more of their trip. They are two Dominican friars whose names are Nicolás de Viena and Guillermo de Trípoli.

Como algo queríamos hacer, hemos optado por montar un par de pequeñas escenas en las que colocar a nuestros personajes sin mucho esfuerzo. Hemos incorporado algún personaje más para darle cierto sentido a los dioramas. En la historia (que no es seguro que sea real) aparecen dos monjes que son enviados por el Papa junto con los hermanos Polo para cerrar relaciones con el gran Khan. Se dan la vuelta al poco de salir de la ciudad de Acre, ante la idea de caer prisioneros del sultán mameluco Baibars. Nosotros hemos preferido que acompañen a nuestros protagonistas durante algo más del camino. Se trata de dos frailes dominicos cuyos nombres son Nicolás de Viena y Guillermo de Trípoli. 

In the first scene, our travelers took of the company of a small caravan that arrives at an oasis. We have used some our Saracens to recreate this small scale on the Silk Road. As a novelty and to rival our Hispanic beauties of our Insulae and our new Vikings women we have made the Arabic version taking advantage of a very interesting piece of the ref. 9483.

En la primera escena, nuestros viajeros aprovecharon la compañía de una pequeña caravana que llega a un oasis. Algunas figuras de nuestros sarracenos de acompañamiento  ayudan a recrear está pequeña escala en la Ruta de la Seda. Como novedad y para rivalizar con nuestras bellezas hispanas de la Insulae y nuestras nuevas vikingas hemos hecho la versión árabe aprovechando una pieza muy interesante de la ref. 9483.

In the second diorama, the Polo brothers have already crossed the Gobi desert and encountered the first populations of Mongols. We could not resist making this Yurt with an old shoe box and a pair of EVA rubber sheets. It took us a couple of hours to finished it and I think it gives a bit of credibility to the scene. We also made some more Mongol using the eskimos of the DS (ref 6559) that have very interesting pieces like women and children.

En el segundo diorama, los hermanos Polo ya han cruzado el desierto del Gobi y se han encontrado con las primeras poblaciones de mongoles. No nos pudimos resistir a hacer esta Yurta con una caja de zapatos vieja y un par de láminas de goma EVA. Nos llevó un par de horas hacerla y creo que le da un poco de credibilidad a la escena. Hemos aprovechado también para hacer algún mongol más utilizando los esquimales del DS (ref. 6559) que tienen piezas muy interesantes como la mujer y los niños.

PLAYMOBIL DIORAMA GREAT WALL OF CHINA

To make an Imperial Chinese Palace is something that is far from our possibilities and I think will be an “unreleased” of our adventures, but we thought that we could do some interesting scenes related to our last post about The travels of Marco Polo .

Hacer un palacio en la China Imperial es algo que está muy lejos de nuestras posibilidades y que creo que se va a quedar en el tintero de nuestras aventuras, pero pensamos que podíamos hacer algunos ambientes interesantes relacionados con nuestra entrada anterior sobre Los Viajes de Marco Polo.

When you think about China, you must think in one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World: The Great Wall of China. We can not rebuild the wall. There is not enough Steck pieces in our vaults. We have only recreated a small section, as a humble tribute.

Es muy difícil pensar en China y que no pase por nuestra mente una de las siete maravillas del mundo moderno: La Gran Muralla China. Nosotros no hemos reconstruido la muralla. No hay suficiente Steck en nuestras cajas. Solo hemos hecho una pequeña sección, como humilde homenaje.

You know the characters and you will see some changes because we have still been customizing. The scene has two objectives: on the one hand, enjoy playing; and on the other, to continue to deepen the use of perspective and the combination of different levels in our dioramas. That is why you will see very similar photos from different angles.

Los personajes los conocéis ya. Veréis algún cambio respecto a las fotos de la otra entrada porque este montaje es anterior y aún hemos hecho modificaciones. La escena tiene dos objetivos: por un lado, disfrutar jugando; y por otro, seguir profundizando en el uso de la perspectiva y la combinación de diferentes planos. Es por eso que veréis fotos muy parecidas desde diferentes ángulos.

I think that we could improve the building with some pieces from the 5479 and 5480 castles, but they are pieces that we were not going to be able to use in other subjects and it was not worth it. So we have opted for a square tower design, less showy, but quite accurate.

Creo que con algunas piezas de los castillos 5479 y 5480 seguro que la escena habría mejorado mucho, pero son piezas que no íbamos a poder utilizar en otras temáticas y no nos merecía la pena. Así que hemos optado por un diseño de torre cuadrada, menos vistoso, pero bastante fiel a la realidad.

We have asked our Mongols to attack the wall and we have took some more photos.

Y como no queríamos que faltase nada, les hemos pedido a nuestros mongoles que se pasen a atacarla y también hemos aprovechado para sacar una tanda más de fotos.

PLAYMOBIL CUSTOM KUBLAI KHAN AND THE TRAVELS OF MARCO POLO

Another project that we have started is related to the figure that the Playmobil Collectors Club made in 2014 about Marco Polo. We thought that he needed some fellows. We would have loved to find in the Playmobil catalog as a complete series. We like to explore new pieces to put together but at a reasonable price. In this case, we have found some "cheap" figures, which abound in flea markets or the Internet and with suitable accessories we think they give a half decent result. It is a double game, on the one hand creating a unique "parallel" series and on the other hand making it cheap at the same time.

Otro proyecto que tenemos a medias, aunque avanzado, es el relacionado con la figura de Marco Polo que sacó el Playmobil Collectors Club en 2014 y que teníamos huérfana de compañeros de fatigas. Son pequeñas series que nos habría encantado encontrar en el catálogo de Playmobil y que nos gusta explorar siempre que se pongan piezas a tiro a un precio razonable. En este caso, hemos tirado de figuras “baratas”, de las que abundan en mercadillos o Internet y que con accesorios adecuados nos parece que dan un resultado bastante decente. Aquí hay un doble juego, por un lado crear una serie “paralela” única y por otro hacer que sea barata al mismo tiempo.

We could not have made any of this without the series of “Asian dragons”. We did not like so much at the beginning and from which, after the years, we can only thank Playmobil for the quantity and quality of the pieces that it has manufactured.

No se podría haber hecho nada de esto sin la serie de dragones asiáticos que tan poco nos gustó al principio y de la que después de los años no podemos más que dar las gracias a Playmobil por la cantidad y calidad de las piezas que ha fabricado.

We started with a main character: Kublai Khan (1215-1294), last Mongolian Khan and first Chinese emperor of the Yuan Dynasty.

Empezamos con un personaje al que le teníamos bastantes ganas: Kublai Khan (1215-1294) Khan de Khanes, último Khan mongol y primer emperador chino de la dinastía Yuan.

The Khan has to be surrounded by his courtiers and guards. We have searched from the characters of the Three Wise Men from different series, even to pieces of the Plain Indians to recreate them. They are very colorful figures and their skirts give them a very interesting and oriental touch.

El Khan tiene que estar rodeado de sus cortesanos y guardias. Hemos buscado desde los personajes de los reyes magos de diferentes épocas hasta en piezas de los indios para recrearlos. Son muy coloridos y sus faldas les dan un toque muy interesante y oriental.

Some figures become to small treasures. We have to control ourselves not to make a full guard, in some case.

Figuras con las que no sabíamos muy bien qué hacer se convierten en pequeños tesoros. Nos tenemos que controlar para no hacer una guardia completa, en algún caso.

Another chapter is the civilians who also have many possibilities, especially since Playmobil pulled that interesting hat in the series 10 of figures. Only some tests, for now.

Otro capítulo son los civiles que también tienen posibilidades, sobre todo desde que Playmobil sacó ese sombrero tan interesante en la serie 10 de figures. Solamente alguna prueba, por ahora.

This is our tribute to the Polo family. They are waiting for a caravan.

Y nuestro guiño a los hermanosPolo. Están pidiendo a gritos una caravana.

We could not miss the Chinese regular troops guarding the frontier line. We have made some cavalry and some infantry. We have bought some Roman legionaries that lately abound in flea markets. They quickly have to move to the Great Wall of China, there are rumors that there are some Mongols who do not agree with the Khan's policy of allowing cultural and religious exchange within their empire.

No podía faltar nuestro homenaje a las tropas regulares chinas que guardan las fronteras. Hemos hecho unos soldados de caballería y algo de infantería. Para esto nos han venido de cine esas figuras de legionarios romanos que últimamente abundan. Rápidamente tienen que salir camino de la muralla, corren rumores que hay algunos mongoles que no están muy de acuerdo con la política del Khan de permitir el intercambio cultural y religioso dentro de su imperio.

It has been a very fun exercise, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Para nosotros ha sido un ejercicio muy divertido, y esperamos que lo disfrutéis tanto como nosotros.
