PLAYMOBIL DIORAMA ODYSSEY (II) THE TROJAN WAR

We continue with our narration. Ulysses regains his memory on the island of Phaeacians and begins to recount his trip. Ulysses, king of Ithaca, left for the Trojan War. The Trojan War is triggered by the abduction of Helena by Paris, the beautiful among the beautiful, daughter of Zeus and Leda. The War, as we discussed in the previous post, is narrated in Homer's Iliad, and lasts approximately 10 years. The other ten years correspond to the trip back home from Ulysses, recounted in the Odyssey.

Seguimos con nuestra narración. Ulises recupera la memoria en la isla de los Feacios y allí comienza a relatar su viaje. Ulises, rey de Ítaca, parte a la guerra de Troya. La Guerra de Troya se desencadena por el rapto de Helena por parte de Paris, la bella entre las bellas, hija de Zeus y Leda. La Guerra, como ya comentamos en la anterior entrada, se narra en la Ilíada de Homero, y tiene una duración aproximada de 10 años. Los otros diez años se corresponden con el viaje de vuelta a casa de Ulises, relatados en la Odisea. 

Although we have treated some aspects of the subject, we will dedicate a first entry to the materials we have used for our recreation and another later with scenes and photographs of our characters in action.

Aunque hemos tratado algún aspecto del tema, vamos a dedicar una primera entrada a los materiales que hemos utilizado para nuestra recreación y otra posterior con escenas y fotografías de nuestros personajes en acción. 

What seemed impossible became possible by chance. And I say by chance because the probability of encountering a 2003 Playset of the Trojan War compatible with Playmobil, in the original box, sealed and for 25 euros is one in a million.

Lo que parecía imposible se convirtió en posible por casualidad. Y digo casualidad porque la probabilidad encontrarse con un Playset de 2003 de la guerra de Troya compatible con Playmobil, en la caja original, sin estrenar y por 25 euros es de una entre un millón. 

We saw it in their day at the one-dollar stores and let them run. They were other times, nor we dreamed that we would do these crazy things. But now we couldn't let it escape. The fundamental incentive is the Trojan horse. I think it is impossible to find such a piece from any toy manufacturer. I hope Playmobil tries at some point.

Los vimos en su día en las tiendas de baratillo y los dejamos correr. Eran otros tiempos, ni soñábamos con que haríamos estas locuras. Pero ahora no podíamos dejarlo escapar. El aliciente fundamental es el caballo de Troya. Creo que es imposible encontrar una pieza así de ningún fabricante de juguetes.  Ojalá Playmobil lo intente en algún momento.

The playset is a very bad copy of the spirit of Playmobil, but it has some details that make it stand out from other compatible toys. The plastic is not of very poor quality and has many details. The horse for us has a 9 out of 10. We can only put the problem of having the legs stuck together. The scale is perfect for our figures and has a very attractive design. The walls are quite well and have served us to give a different touch to our Trojan walls.

El juego es una muy mala copia del espíritu de Playmobil, pero tiene algunos detalles que lo hacen destacar sobre otros juguetes compatibles. El plástico no es de muy mala calidad y tiene bastantes detalles. El caballo para nosotros tiene un 9 sobre 10. Solamente podemos poner el problema de tener las patas pegadas. La escala es perfecta para nuestras figuras y tiene un diseño muy atractivo. 

Las murallas dan el pego y nos han servido para dar un toque diferente a nuestros muros de Troya.

The rest does not have much to show. The figures and the other accessories are unfortunate, the weapons are self decent, but they are not compatible with Playmobil. However, just for the horse, it's worth it.

El resto ya no tiene mucho recorrido. Las figuras y los otros accesorios son lamentables, se salvan las armas, pero no son compatibles con Playmobil.  No obstante, solamente por el caballo, merece la pena.

When we begin to imagine this series, we rule out making any incursion into Troy. Later we made an attempt to recreate the walls of Troy, especially for the leading role that Ulysses had in the episode of the Trojan horse.

Cuando empezamos a imaginar esta serie, descartamos hacer cualquier incursión en Troya. Posteriormente hicimos un intento de recrear las murallas de Troya, sobre todo por el papel protagonista que Ulises había tenido en el episodio del caballo de Troya. 

We had devoted a lot of effort to other pieces and arrived almost exhausted to the walls of Troy. We had a new revision of Greek warriors and decided that some of them would be worth it for this adventure. We add some more figures like our Paris and our Helen of Troy.

Habíamos dedicado mucho esfuerzo a otras piezas y llegamos casi agotados a los muros de Troya. Contábamos con una nueva revisión de guerreros griegos y decidimos que algunos de ellos valdrían para esta aventura. Añadimos alguna figura más como nuestro Paris y nuestra Helena de Troya.

For the initial walls, we only had the Steck System pieces, so we dared with a structure that looked more like a wall during the Crusades. With some ornament, we thought it looked fairly good. We leave you several photos so that you can compare them with those of the next entry, which already have the pieces of the Trojan horse set incorporated.

Para los muros iniciales solo contábamos con el Steck, así que nos atrevimos con una estructura que más parecía una muralla en tiempos de las Cruzadas. Con algún adorno nos pareció que quedaba medianamente bien. Os dejamos varias fotos para que podáis comparar con las de la siguiente entrada, que ya tienen incorporadas las piezas del set del caballo de Troya.

WE LOVE IT! XVII CENTURY (II)

We are going to compile some audiovisual resources in an post so that you can make a quick immersion in the period before introducing our work. We do not want to make a compendium, just a small sample that can stimulate the imagination of our readers so that they can then judge if we have managed to capture something of the period we visit.

Vamos a recopilar en una entrada algunos recursos audiovisuales para que puedan hacer una inmersión rápida en el periodo antes de presentar nuestro trabajo. No queremos hacer un compendio, tan solo una pequeña muestra que pueda estimular la imaginación de nuestros lectores para que luego puedan juzgar si hemos logrado captar algo del periodo que visitamos.

"Cromwell" (1970), is one of the films that has helped us the most. Filmed in Spain, it shows the great effort to faithfully recreate the period. Few scenes of battles of this period are recorded with such accuracy in the cinema. Two samples: the battle of Edgehill and the battle of Naseby between parliamentarists and the royalists. A complete catalog of the armament and the combat techniques of the time.

“Cromwell” (1970), es una de las películas que más nos ha ayudado. Rodada en España, se nota el gran esfuerzo por recrear fielmente el periodo. Pocas escenas de batallas de este periodo están recogidas con tanta exactitud en el cine. Dos muestras: la batalla de Edgehill y la batalla de Naseby entre partidarios del parlamento y los realistas que tienen un catalogo completo del armamento y las técnicas de combate de la época.

Much more older but beatiful is "Queen Cristina of Sweden" of 1933. Some say it is one of Greta Garbo's best films. It is another cinema, which is no longer done, but with an undoubted charm. A delight, here you have a beautiful sample.

Mucho más antigua es “La reina Cristina de Suecia” de 1933. Algunos dicen que es una de las mejores películas de Greta Garbo. Es otro cine, del que ya no se hace, pero con un encanto indudable. Una delicia, de muestra un botón.

Although we have not seen the film, "The Deluge" (1974) gives us a great recreation of the army of the father of Cristina of Sweden (Gustavo II Adolfo, "The lion of the north") in the middle of the 30 years War.

Aunque no hemos visto la película, “El diluvio” (1974) nos da una estupenda recreación del ejercito del padre de Cristina de Suecia (Gustavo II Adolfo, “El león del norte”) en plena Guerra de los 30 años.

Impossible not to remenber Cyrano (1990), which is another masterpiece. Everyone remembers the scene of the defense of the mill, but we preferred to put one that is adorned with the wonderful soundtrack of the film.

Imposible no nombrar Cyrano (1990), que es otra obra de arte. Lo normal sería poner la escena de la defensa del molino, pero hemos preferido poner una que está adornada de la estupenda banda sonora de la película.

Finally, a small tribute to the 1948 version of "The Three Musketeers". No special effects are needed when you have a good script.

Por último, un pequeño guiño a la versión de “Los tres mosqueteros” de 1948. No hacen falta efectos especiales cuando se cuenta con un buen guión. 

But there are not only movies. The endless pictorial, architectural, literary and musical contribution of this period has served to "soak up the atmosphere" and take many ideas for situations and characters.

Pero no solo hay películas. La abundantísima aportación pictórica, arquitectónica, literaria y musical que tiene este periodo nos ha servido para  “empaparnos” del tema y tomar muchas ideas para situaciones y personajes. 

In particular we have appreciated the music that has accompanied us throughout the creative process and that is already part of the soundtrack of this adventure.

En particular hemos agradecido la música que nos ha acompañado durante todo el proceso creativo y que forma ya parte de la banda sonora de esta aventura.

Here we offer you some recommendations for those who are enjoying the summer and have time available to learn about Vikings. Not only to buy, one of them is a PDF so you can enjoy it free cost. For those who do not want to spend, we also remind you that the municipal libraries are full of jewels in which to find some inspiration.

Aquí os traemos unas recomendaciones para los que estéis disfrutando del verano y tengáis tiempo disponible para dedicarle. Es este caso son unos libros sobre vikingos. Como todo no es comprar, uno de ellos está en PDF para que podáis disfrutarlo. Para aquellos que no quieran gastar, también os recordamos que las bibliotecas municipales están llenas de joyas en las que encontrar algo de inspiración.

The first book, or better yet almost a comic, was already recommended by one of our readers in a previous post, is "Harald, the last Viking" the first in a collection (Historietas) of historical disclosure aimed at children and young people, but that will also delight adults who come. It is a collaboration between DESPERTA FERRO Ediciones and El Fisgón Histórico, which we hope will have a long life. It relates the life of the last viking pretender to the kingdom of England: Harald Hardrada. The pictures are fantastic. Only the edition in Spanish is available. (Approximate price 18 euros).

El primer libro, o mejor casi un comic, ya estaba recomendado por uno de nuestros lectores en una entrada anterior, es “Harald, el último vikingo” el primero de una colección (Historietas) de divulgación histórica enfocada al público infantil y juvenil, pero que hará también las delicias de los adultos que se acerquen. Se trata de una colaboración entre DESPERTA FERRO Ediciones y El Fisgón histórico, que esperamos tenga una larga vida. Relata  la vida del último pretendiente vikingo al reino de Inglaterra: Harald Hardrada. Las imágenes son fantásticas. Únicamente está disponible la edición en castellano. (Precio aproximado 18 euros).

Also in more comic format, we have Vikings! by Vincent Carpentier (Editorial NÓRDICA) The illustrator Jeff Pourquié offers us a particular vision of the Viking world, which may be interesting for the most enthusiastic of the subject. In terms of content is a little fall short. There is an edition in French and Spanish. (Approximate price 17 euros).

También en formato más de comic, tenemos a Vikingos! de Vincent Carpentier (Editorial NÓRDICA) El ilustrador Jeff Pourquié nos ofrece una visión particular del mundo vikingo, que puede resultar interesante para los más forofos del tema. En cuanto a contenido, se nos ha quedado un poco corto. Existe edición en francés y castellano. (Precio aproximado 17 euros).

As an alternative and for a similar price, we offer you "Demonios del Norte" (Devils of the North)  by Edaf, witten by Carlos Canales and Miguel del Rey. In this case, we have a very complete combination of data and images that can make this book a great companion for vacations. We only know the Spanish edition. (Approximate price 24 euros).

Como alternativa y por un precio similar os ofrecemos “Demonios del Norte” de Edaf, de Carlos Canales y Miguel del Rey. En este caso, tenemos una combinación muy completa de datos e imágenes que pueden hacer de este libro un estupendo compañero para las vacaciones. Solo conocemos la edición española. Our fourth recommendation is an old, discontinued book that we found in PDF format in a blog. This is "A través del tiempo, Los Vikingos" whose original is "Time Traveler Book of Viking Raiders" (1978 Usborne) We greatly appreciate that there are people dedicated to make available to the reader these gems that are very difficult to find (and free cost). It is full of very interesting illustrations that we hope you find useful.

Nuestra cuarta recomendación es un libro antiguo, descatalogado que hemos encontrado en formato PDF en un blog. Se trata de “A través del tiempo, los Vikingos" cuyo original es “Time Traveller Book of Viking Raiders” (1978 Usborne). Agradecemos enormemente que haya gente dedicada a poner a disposición del lector estas joyitas que son difíciles de encontrar y gratis. Está lleno de ilustraciones muy interesantes que esperamos os resulten de utilidad.

WE LOVE IT! THE SAGA OF BIORN - SIGURDR - VIKING

Some of you will have thought that we have forgotten about the Vikings with so many posts about Romans and Greeks. Not so, the Viking inside us is still alive and is waiting to recreate new adventures. To find that inspiration, from time to time, we look for this subject on YouTube. This post will be rare to some of you, but we wanted to share these great videos, which we have found hanging on the net and that help us find ideas for our adventures. Although they are in English they do not need translation.

Algunos pensaréis que nos hemos olvidado de los vikingos con tantas entradas de romanos y griegos. No es así, el vikingo que llevamos dentro sigue vivo y está esperando para recrear nuevas aventuras. Para buscar esa inspiración, de vez en cuando, buscamos algún tema que nos interesa en sitios como YouTube. Esta entrada os resultará raro a algunos, pero queríamos compartir estos estupendos videos, que hemos encontrado colgados en la red y que nos sirven para encontrar ideas para nuestras aventuras. Aunque están en inglés no necesitan traducción.

The first one is "The Saga Of Biorn", it is a project developed in 2011 by The Animation Workshop. It's an 8 minute wonder for all audiences, with a surprising ending. We had not laughed so much in a long time. Great!

El primero es “The Saga Of Biorn”, se trata de un proyecto elaborado en 2011 por The Animation Workshop. Es una maravilla de 8 minutos para todos los públicos, con un final sorprendente. Hacía tiempo que no nos reíamos tanto. ¡Fantástico!

The second one is "SIGURDR" (Siegfried). Aimed at an older audience, it is a great recreation, which has captivated us.

El segundo es  “SIGURDR” (Sigfrido). Dirigido a un público más mayor, es una estupenda recreación, que nos ha cautivado.

 

The third one is "VIKING", a short animation but with some very interesting action details.

El tercer video es “VIKING”, una animación corta pero con algunos detalles de acción muy interesantes.

REVIEW: CELTS, PEOPLES OF THE PAST

Celtas, pueblos del Pasado. Su autor es Robin Place. Otra maravilla de libro, lleno de preciosas ilustraciones que harán que queráis montar vuestra aldea celta. Una guía detallada que recomiendo comprar, y que es ideal para encontrar inspiración para vuestras aventuras en la Europa de la caída del Imperio Romano. Ya no hacen libros como estos. Esperamos que os gusten.

A detailed guide to your adventures in Europe from the fall of the Roman Empire. They do not make books like these anymore. We hope you like them.
