PLAYMOBIL DIORAMA THE LOST WORLD EXPLORERS (II)

Once again our adventurers have found an unexpected exit in one of the caves they were exploring. After their triumphant return after having discovered the mythical elephants graveyard, they managed to finance a new expedition to Central America in search of the origin of some strange fossils. When they were about to desist in their attempt, they have come across the greatest discovery of the nineteenth century: The Lost World.

Nuevamente nuestros aventureros han encontrado una salida inesperada en una de las cuevas que estaban explorando. Tras su retorno triunfal después de haber descubierto el mítico cementerio de elefantes, consiguieron que se financiase una nueva expedición a Centro América en busca del origen de algunos fósiles extraños. Cuando ya estaban a punto de desistir en su intento, se han topado con el mayor descubrimiento del siglo XIX: El mundo perdido.

Although it is a scenic that we had initially thought to set other dioramas, we tried to see how our group of explorers fit in and we were very satisfied with the result. The effect of several heights, caves, bends, makes a space that the same serves for a Mediterranean island that for a valley of the Jurassic period. Always clear, putting a little imagination on our part. In addition, we had been longing to do something big with the dinosaurs, because we had not managed to make a diorama in conditions until now.

Aunque se trata de un decorado que inicialmente habíamos pensado para ambientar otras escenas, probamos a ver qué tal encajaban nuestro grupo de exploradores y hemos quedado muy satisfechos con el resultado. El efecto de varias alturas, cuevas, recodos, hace un espacio que lo mismo sirve para una isla mediterránea que para un valle del periodo jurásico. Siempre claro, poniendo un poco de imaginación de nuestra parte. Además, teníamos clavada la espinita con los dinosaurios, pues no habíamos conseguido hacer un diorama en condiciones hasta ahora.

The Playmobil dinos series is, in our humble opinion, one of the best series they have produced in recent years. They are clearly intended for children (like everything they do), which does not prevent them from having great pieces, accessories and scenics, which could perfectly be sold in the store of a museum of natural sciences. The animals are made with very good taste. In our case, we have played a lot and it is thanks to them that we can make these little sign or respect to other subjects.

La serie de los dinosaurios dePlaymobil es, en nuestra humilde opinión, una de las mejores series que han producido en estos últimos años. Están claramente destinados al público infantil (como todo lo que hacen), lo que no impide que cuenten con estupendas piezas, accesorios y decorados, que perfectamente se podrían comercializar en la tienda de un museo de ciencias naturales. Los animales están hechos con muy buen gusto. En nuestro caso se han jugado mucho y es gracias a ellos, que podemos hacer estos pequeños guiños a otros temas.

Our friends decided that it was better to keep the discovery secret, but the professor kept some of the photographs of the expedition and devoted his last years to painting the memories of that fantastic adventure. Now they come to light and here we leave them in case you want to take a look.

Nuestros amigos decidieron que era mejor mantener el descubrimiento en secreto, pero el profesor guardó alguna de las fotografías de la expedición y dedicó sus últimos años a pintar los recuerdos de aquella fantástica aventura. Ahora salen a la luz y aquí os los dejamos por si queréis echar un vistazo.

PLAYMOBIL DIORAMA THE LOST WORLD EXPLORERS AT THE ELEPHANT GRAVEYARD

The elephants graveyard is a myth that has given much play in adventure stories since they began to spread the word of their existence. It happened a bit like El Dorado, saving the distances. It's funny how you can build a chimera almost out of nowhere. Today it's the same, but we've changed the name to "fake news" and they're still working.

Our explorers have travelled to the heart of Africa to live this adventure. The general objective of the diorama is to play with spaces, light, framing, depth and colors. We keep learning and keep trying new formulas. Our cloth floor imitating sand has yet to give us much play. The polystyrene rocks are still a great contribution for the construction of funds. We had to get rid of them after this rainy winter.

El cementerio de elefantes es un mito que ha dado mucho juego en las historias de aventuras desde que se empezó a correr la voz de su existencia. Le pasó un poco como a El Dorado, salvando las distancias. Es curioso cómo se puede construir una quimera casi de la nada. Hoy pasa igual, pero le hemos cambiado el nombre por “fake news” y siguen colando.

Nuestros exploradores se han adentrado en el corazón de África para vivir esta aventura. El objetivo general del diorama vuelve a ser jugar con los espacios, la luz, los encuadres, la profundidad y los colores. Seguimos aprendiendo y seguimos probando fórmulas nuevas. Nuestro suelo de tela imitando arena aún tiene que darnos mucho juego. Las rocas de poliestireno siguen siendo un gran aporte para la construcción de fondos, una pena porque tuvimos que desprendernos de ella después de este invierno tan lluvioso.

Additionally we wanted to pay tribute to both the genre and the colleagues who have already done other dioramas, scenes and customizations. They are dedicated to them. As we said, Playmobil has its own series of explorers with dinosaurs (which is part of the plot of The Lost World), with which I think he wanted to recover part of the references of mythical adventures of the brand (such as the temple box 3015). References such as the 9429 can be very interesting for children and, despite the fact that we are nostalgic, they must necessarily evolve.

Adicionalmente hemos querido rendir homenaje tanto al género como a los compañeros que han hecho ya otros dioramas, escenas y personalizaciones. A ellos va dedicada. Como ya dijimos, Playmobil tiene una serie de exploradores con dinosaurios (que es parte del argumento de El Mundo Perdido), con las que creo ha querido recuperar parte de las referencias de aventuras míticas de la marca (como el templo de la caja 3015). Referencias como la 9429 pueden resultar muy interesantes para el público infantil y (aunque nos pese a los nostálgicos) tienen que evolucionar necesariamente.

PLAYMOBIL CUSTOM THE LOST WORD EXPLORERS

Definitely it is not our theme and we arrived when many others have passed before, but we could not resist completing a small group of explorers. We wanted to do something similar, as a tribute, but not a copy of what was already seen. We have taken as literary references mainly of "The Lost World" by Arthur Conan Doyle, but we have also borrowed much from the novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs (Tarzan), "The Mines of King Solomon" by H. Rider Haggard, "The time Machine" (H.G. Wells) and many of Jules Verne's novels. We have also wanted to pay tribute to all those cinema adventures that happend in exotic, unexplored, fictitious places in the vast majority of cases, and in which they can appear from dinosaurs to mythological monsters, always under the surveillance of tribes of hostile native.

Definitivamente no es nuestro tema y llegamos cuando otros muchos han pasado, pero no nos hemos podido resistir a completar un pequeño grupo de aventureros. Queríamos hacer algo similar, como homenaje, pero que no fuera una copia de lo ya visto. Hemos tomado como referencias literarias principalmente “El mundo perdido” de Arthur Conan Doyle, pero también hemos tomado prestado mucho de las novelas de Edgar Rice Burroughs (Tarzán), “Las minas del Rey Salomón” de H. Rider Haggard, “La máquina del tiempo” (H.G. Wells) y de muchas de las novelas de Julio Verne. También hemos querido rendir homenaje a todas esas aventuras cinematográficas que se desarrollan en parajes exóticos, inexplorados, ficticios en la gran mayoría de los casos, y en los que pueden aparecer desde dinosaurios hasta monstruos mitológicos, siempre bajo la vigilancia de tribus de indígenas hostiles.

With this starting point, we needed to create (imitate) the typical characters or archetypes of these adventures and their expeditions.

Con esto como punto de partida, necesitábamos crear (imitar) los personajes tipo o arquetipos de estas aventuras y sus expediciones.

We had to recruit a professor (crazy), who is looking for any lost treasure or with a theory about the existence of an unexplored island or continent ... We are talking about an elderly scientist, distracted, more aware of his magnifying glass than the dangers that lie in wait for him. His motivation in life is to leave astounded colleagues of the Royal Society to which he belongs to.

Teníamos que reclutar a un profesor (chiflado), que esté buscando cualquier tesoro perdido o con una teoría sobre la existencia de alguna isla o continente inexplorado… Estamos hablando de un científico de avanzada edad, distraído, más pendiente de su lupa que de los peligros que le acechan. Su motivación en la vida es dejar boquiabiertos a sus colegas de la Sociedad científica londinense a la que pertenece.

It could not miss the scientist's niece, who compensates with her pragmatism, the follies of his uncle. Of course she has to be beautiful, intelligent and capable. She will be our heroine.

No podía faltar la sobrina del científico, que compensa con su pragmatismo, las locuras de su tío. Por supuesto tiene que ser bella, inteligente y capaz. Será nuestra heroína.  

The next stereotype is the gentleman, the hero. It may be a reporter or a young Lord in love with our scientist's niece. He begins his journey bound by events and by his call of duty.

El siguiente estereotipo es el galán, el héroe. Puede bien ser un reportero o un joven lord enamorado de la sobrina de nuestro científico. Inicia su viaje obligado por los acontecimientos y por su sentido del deber.

There is no self-respecting expedition without a guide. This role must be represented by a young adventurer, who will act as the alter ego of our hero, competing for the love of the lady. Expert hunter, struggled in a thousand adventures, behind his apparent interest in the material, hides the true adventurer, generous and brave. It will be a fundamental piece for the company to reach a successful conclusion and to test the heart of our heroine.

No hay expedición que se precie sin un guía. Este papel debe ser representado por un aventurero también joven, que hará de álter ego de nuestro héroe, rivalizando por el amor de la dama. Cazador experto, curtido en mil aventuras, detrás de su aparente interés en lo material, se esconde el verdadero aventurero, generoso y valiente. Será pieza fundamental para que la empresa llegue a buen fin y para poner a prueba el corazón de nuestra heroína.

We already have the bulk of the expedition. We have used all the pieces we have found among our western figures, natives, dinosaurs ... We wanted to give a colonial aspect, but at the same time, totally adapted to an adventure in the remote jungles of South America or Africa. Lot of salakots, lot of brown colours, lot of toasted tones ...  Winchesters, Colts, cartridge belts .... Our adventurers must be well equipped.

Ya tenemos el grueso de la expedición. Hemos recurrido a todas las piezas que hemos encontrado entre nuestras figuras del oeste, nativos, dinosaurios… Queríamos dar un aspecto colonial, pero al mismo tiempo, totalmente adaptado a una aventura en las selvas recónditas de Suramérica o África. Mucho salacot, mucho marrón, mucho tostado… mucho Winchester, mucho Colt, cananas, cartucheras…. Nuestros aventureros deben ir bien pertrechados.

Although Playmobil already has its own series of modern explorers, it may be the perfect occasion for them to take out a few boxes of "classic" explorers. In October 2019 the movie "Jungle Cruise" (based on the Disney attraction of the same name) will be released and will feature Dwayne Johnson (The Rock), Emily Blunt and Dani Rovira ... No need to buy to a license, if they come back to the old ideas of the brand...

Aunque Playmobil ya tiene su propia serie de exploradores modernos, puede ser la ocasión perfecta para que saquen unas cajas de exploradores “clásicos”. En octubre de 2019 se estrenará la película “Jungle Cruise” (basada en la atracción de Disney del mismo nombre) y que contará con Dwayne Johnson (La Roca), Emily Blunt y Dani Rovira… No hace falta recurrir a una licencia, si retoman las viejas ideas de la marca…
