PLAYMOBIL CUSTOM ANCIENT GREEK CHARACTERS, CENTAURS AND MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURES

One of the projects in which my youngest son had more interest lately was to continue expanding the theme of Ancient Greece. Playmobil is making it difficult for us because, although it has created the references of the Greek Gods, it is striving to make its combinations increasingly complicated (using new colors of both skin and pieces that do not have an easy fit with other figures). We wanted to take a tour through some of the stories and in the end, we have chosen Odyssey. Being as it is a very limited subject in pieces, and of which we almost always have to pull series like that of the Egyptians or Romans, continuing to deepen the theme of Ancient Greece was a great challenge for us. The appearance of the second series of Greek Gods was something that finally encouraged us to make so, especially after being lucky to have some spare pieces served in the DS. To make all happened, we had to resort to the pieces we already had (with some revision) and to the creation of new characters that would help in our dioramas, in addition to some specific creation “due to the script's demands”.

Uno de los proyectos en los que mi hijo menor tenía más interés últimamente era el de seguir ampliando el tema de la Grecia Clásica. Playmobil nos lo está poniendo difícil porque, si bien ha sacado las referencias de los dioses griegos, se está empeñando en que sus combinaciones sean cada vez más complicadas (utilizando nuevos colores tanto de piel como de piezas que no tienen un encaje fácil con otras figuras). Nosotros queríamos hacer un recorrido a través de alguna de las historias y al final hemos elegido la Odisea. Siendo como es un tema muy limitado en piezas, y de las que casi siempre hay que tirar de series como la de los egipcios o romanos, seguir profundizando en el tema de la Grecia Clásica era un gran reto para nosotros. La aparición de la segunda serie de dioses griegos fue algo que nos animó a ello finalmente, sobre todo después de tener la suerte de que nos sirvieran algunas piezas sueltas en el DS. Para ello, hemos tenido que recurrir a las piezas que ya teníamos (con alguna revisión) y a la creación de nuevos personajes que ayudaran en nuestros montajes, además de alguna creación específica “por exigencias del guión”.

The challenge was greater if possible after seeing the great work that other fans were doing and specifically "myplaymocustom", which leaves the aim at a height almost impossible to achieve. The material in figures and dioramas is quite wide, so we have decided to propose it as a series (at the risk of getting bored) with two parts. In the first part some characters will be introduced to, and in the second part a series of posts will be made with some chapters of the Odyssey.

El reto era mayor si cabe después de ver el estupendo trabajo que estaban haciendo otros aficionados y en concreto “myplaymocustom”, que deja el listón a una altura prácticamente imposible de alcanzar. El material en figuras y dioramas es bastante amplio, así que hemos decidido plantearlo como una serie (a riesgo de aburrir) con dos partes. En una primera parte se presentarán algunos personajes y en la segunda se harán una serie de entradas con algunos capítulos de la Odisea.

We start with some mythological creatures. The centaurs are a mixture of horse and man. It seems to symbolize the wild, the wild part of man, although there are also civilized and wise centaurs such as Chiron, who is said to have been the master of Ulysses.

Comenzamos con algunas criaturas imaginarias. Los centauros son una mezcla de caballo y hombre. Parece que simbolizan lo salvaje, la parte salvaje del hombre, aunque también hay centauros civilizados y sabios como Quirón, del que se dice que fue maestro de Ulises.

We did not know very well how to make them, so we studied some online figures before starting our work. After that, we decided that we would use the modern bodies, which are more stylized and the horses of versions 2 and 3 of Playmobil. We already had the experience of putty with our Sleipnir, so we tried not to make the same mistakes. We have attached the skeleton to the horse's body (so that it is still possible to disassemble them) and we have been adding layers of putty that we have finally sanded. The paint used is MOLOTOW spray and the horsehair and hooves are painted by brush with acrylic paint from the one dollar shop. The total production cost of each centaur is about 5 euro, including the pieces.

No sabíamos muy bien cómo hacerlos, así que estudiamos algunos en la red previamente a comenzar nuestro trabajo. Tras ello, decidimos que utilizaríamos los cuerpos modernos, que son más estilizados y los caballos de las versiones 2 y 3 de Playmobil. Teníamos ya la experiencia de la masilla con nuestro Sleipnir, así que intentamos no cometer los mismos errores. Hemos unido el esqueleto al cuerpo del caballo (de tal forma que sigue siendo posible desmontarlos) y hemos ido añadiendo capas de masilla que finalmente hemos lijado. La pintura utilizada es de spray de MOLOTOW y las crines y pezuñas están pintadas a pincel con pintura acrílica de los chinos. El coste de producción total de cada centauro es de unos 5 euros, incluyendo las piezas.

We have made three adult centaurs, a centauride, and a young centaur. They seem great to us. We have also tested how dioramas feel with some test scenes.

Hemos hecho tres centauros adultos, una centauride y un joven centauro. A nosotros nos parecen geniales. También hemos probado como les sientan los dioramas con algún escenario de prueba.

At that point we move on to the next challenge, to make a faun or a satyr. We were not so lucky here. The difficulty of achieving a balanced figure on two legs and the addition of the horns were two difficulties that we have not overcome with A. Here we leave the result for you to judge.

Llegados a ese punto pasamos al siguiente reto, hacer un fauno o un sátiro. Aquí no tuvimos tanta suerte. La dificultad de conseguir una figura equilibrada sobre dos patas y el añadido de los cuernos fueron dos dificultades que no hemos superado con nota. Aquí os dejamos el resultado para que juzguéis. 

Putty has become an everyday accessory, so there is always a project going on. Griffin was another mythological animal that we had to face. Half eagle, half lion. To do this we use a vulture (wings), an eagle (head and front legs) and a leopard (body). The result does not seem bad to us, but it still shows the shortcomings we have in the plane of sculpture.

La masilla se ha convertido en un accesorio cotidiano, así que siempre hay un proyecto en marcha. El grifo era otro animal mitológico al que teníamos que enfrentarnos. Mitad águila, mitad león. Para hacerlo utilizamos un buitre (alas), un águila (cabeza y patas delanteras) y un leopardo (cuerpo).  El resultado no nos parece malo, pero deja ver todavía las carencias que tenemos en el plano de la escultura.
