PLAYMOBIL CUSTOM XVII CENTURY INFANTRY

I'm not sure how it started. I think it was when we remade some of the figures for our post of the mysterious barricades. I was always reluctant to try "modern" periods because of the difficulty they have. As far as history is concerned, Playmobil had quite a few limitations. It is true that until the 90s they have been characterized by making great historical references, but they have not been left behind either later ... Vikings, Romans and Egyptians prove it. As always, it can not pleased everyone. For us, the change that the pirates series had been experiencing has been the signal we were waiting for. The new series of 2007 with references such as 4294 or 4295 opened a new world of possibilities and show a turn towards the sixteenth and seventeenth century, compared to previous pirates more focused on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The series of 2015, heavily influenced by the film "Pirates of the Caribbean" reconfirmed the way.

No sé muy bien cómo empezó. Creo que fue cuando remodelamos algunas de las figuras para nuestra entrada de lasbarricadas misteriosas. Siempre fui reacio a probar periodos “modernos” por la dificultad que tienen. En cuanto a historia se refiere, Playmobil tenía bastantes limitaciones. Es cierto que hasta los 90 se han caracterizado por hacer referencias muy potentes, pero tampoco se han quedado atrás después… vikingos, romanos y egipcios lo demuestran. Como siempre, no llueve a gusto de todos. Para nosotros el cambio que han ido experimentando los piratas ha sido la señal que estábamos esperando. La  nueva serie de 2007 con referencias como la 4294 o 4295 abrieron un nuevo mundo de posibilidades y demuestran un giro hacia el siglo XVI y XVII, frente a los piratas anteriores más centrados en los siglos XVIII y XIX. La serie de 2015, muy influenciada por “Piratas del Caribe” reconfirmó la tendencia.

The quantity of pieces, the variety of colors and the availability of the DS have allowed us to undertake this project. We do not lose hope that our favorite brand will give us a piece more. We would love to have some more sword, an harquebus in conditions and some guns ... Dreaming is free of charge, but it was also unthinkable to see those wide-brimmed hats or those legs with high boots. I put the idea there. 

La cantidad de piezas, la variedad de colores y la disponibilidad del DS nos han permitido acometer este proyecto. No perdemos la esperanza de que nuestra marca favorita nos regale alguna pieza más. Nos encantaría contar con alguna espada más, un arcabuz en condiciones y algunas pistolas de rueda… Soñar es gratis, pero también era impensable ver esos sombreros de ala ancha o esas piernas con botas de vuelta. Ahí lo dejo.

The key pieces for our infantry have been the short pants legs. Without them it would not have been possible to do so. Centered as we were in the English Civil War, we have chosen to make soldiers in which a color predominates: red, blue and a third group of varied figures to identify parliamentarians, royalists or Scots. Those colors may well be valid for other armies. For example, red fits perfectly for imperial troops or blue for Swedish troops of the Thirty Years' War or as French musketeers, and the rest may well be mercenaries of any nationality. The structure that we have taken is to make some officer mounted on horseback, a command set on foot, pikemen and arquebusiers.

Unas piezas clave para nuestra infantería han sido las piernas de pantalón corto. Sin ellas no habría sido posible hacerlo. Centrados como estábamos en la Guerra Civil Inglesa, hemos optado por hacer soldados en los que predomine un color: rojo, azul y un tercer grupo de figuras variadas para identificar parlamentaristas, realistas o escoceses. Esos colores bien pueden valer para otros ejércitos. Por ejemplo, el rojo encaja perfectamente para las tropas imperiales o el azul para las tropas suecas de la guerra de los treinta años o como mosqueteros franceses, y el resto bien pueden ser mercenarios de cualquier nacionalidad. La estructura que hemos tomado es hacer algún oficial montado a caballo, un grupo de mando a pie, piqueros y arcabuceros.

In the red group there is more anthracite and black. The dark morion of ghost pirates has been very good for us.

En el grupo del rojo hay más antracita y negro. El morrión oscuro de los piratas fantasmas nos ha venido muy bien.

The third group has a little more variety, we love how they wear berets and wool caps.

El tercer grupo tiene un poco mas de variedad, nos encantan como les quedan las boinas y los gorros de lana.

There is always some figure that could fit into the musketeers. No problem, we have also made a small incursion that we will introduce to you in the future.

Siempre queda alguna figura que podría encajar en los mosqueteros. No hay problema, también hemos hecho un pequeña incursión que os presentaremos en el futuro.

Finally, an experiment with an arquebus and fork that we bought at a flea market some time ago to explore.

PLAYMOBIL DIORAMA PILGRIMS FATHERS AND THANKSGIVING

Each fourth Thursday of November (the next day 22) is celebrated Thanksgiving Day in the United States. It is a tradition that went back to the seventeenth century, and that comes from the first English settlers who arrived in North America. The Puritans (radical Calvinist Protestants) had a lot of problems in England because they did not agree with the fact that the king was the highest representative of the Church on earth. More or less they had to run out of England to save their own skin. They decided to go to Holland, but the outbreak of the Thirty Years War and a possible Catholic victory could only bring them even more problems. Thus, they decided to embark towards the new world with the idea of ​​founding a new Jerusalem in which there would be freedom of worship.

El cuarto jueves de noviembre (el próximo día 22) se celebra el Día de Acción de Gracias en Estados Unidos. Se trata de una tradición que se remonta al siglo XVII, y que viene de los primeros colonos ingleses que se instalaron en Norteamérica. Los puritanos (protestantes radicales calvinistas) tenían bastantes problemas en Inglaterra porque no estaban muy de acuerdo con que el rey fuera el máximo representante de la Iglesia en la tierra. Más o menos tuvieron que salir corriendo de Inglaterra para salvar el pellejo. Decidieron ir a Holanda, pero el estallido de la guerra de los treinta años y una posible victoria católica solo les podría traer más problemas aún. Así las cosas, decidieron embarcarse hacia el nuevo mundo con la idea de fundar una nueva Jerusalén en la que existiría la libertad de culto.

Initially the trip was envisaged in two ships (Mayflower and Speedwell), but due to a breakdown, only the Mayflower finally sailed in August 1620 with 102 souls. They are known as Pilgrim Fathers and are considered the founders of the United States of America. It was not an easy trip and after a brief stopover in Newfoundland, they reached land in late fall in what is now known as Cape Cod, later they founded the Plymouth Colony.

Inicialmente se preveía el viaje en dos barcos (Mayflower y Speedwell), pero debido a una avería, solamente el Mayflower zarpó finalmente en agosto de 1620 con 102 almas. Se les conoce como Padres peregrinos y se les considera los fundadores de los Estados Unidos de América. No fue un viaje fácil y tras una breve escala en Terranova, alcanzaron tierra a finales de otoño en lo que hoy se conoce como cabo Cod, fundando posteriormente la Colonia de Plymouth.

Before leaving the ship they signed the Mayflower Compact, which is a document that reflects the self-government of the colony and is considered a precursor of the first constitution of the United States of America.

What they found we can imagine, the coast of Virginia (in honor of Queen Elizabeth I of England, known as the "Virgin Queen") in November is anything but a paradise. Cold, hunger, disease ... they were hard during the first winter. Thanks to the Wampanoag Indians, who lend them a hand, they got a few ahead. Already in 1623, after a good harvest, it seems that they sat down to eat (Indians and pilgrims) and share the bread (also the turkey) and give thanks to God.

Lo que se encontraron nos lo podemos imaginar, la costa de Virginia (en honor a la reina Isabel I de Inglaterra, conocida como la “Reina Virgen”) en noviembre es todo menos un paraíso. Frío, hambre, enfermedad... las pasaron canutas durante el primer invierno. Gracias a los indios Wampanoag, que les echaron una mano, salieron unos pocos adelante. Ya en 1623, tras una buena cosecha, parece que se sentaron a comer (indios y peregrinos) y compartir el pan (también el pavo) y dar gracias a Dios.

We have tried to recreate the moment of arrival in Cape Cod. The Mayflower is anchored near the coast and has sent the first boats to explore. The natives have come to receive them, wishing to know them and curious about their appearance.

Hemos intentado recrear el momento de la llegada a Cabo Cod. El Mayflower está anclado cerca de la costa y ha mandado los primeros botes para explorar. Los nativos han acudido a recibirlos, deseando conocerlos y curiosos de su impedimenta. 

The Puritans did not complicate their lives, everything that happened to them was a consequence of divine action. So when a disaster came, they fasted as a sign of repentance and when they received a blessing, they did an act of thanksgiving. As a curious fact they were contrary to the celebration of religious festivities, even rejected the celebration of Christmas. If they were to see the present-day situation!

Los puritanos no se complicaban la vida, todo lo que les ocurría era consecuencia de la acción divina. Así cuando venía un desastre, ayunaban como signo de arrepentimiento y cuando recibían una bendición, hacían una acción de gracias. Como dato curioso eran contrarios a la celebración de las festividades religiosas, incluso rechazaban la celebración de la Navidad. ¡Si levantaran la cabeza!

The Puritans who remained in England, few years later and convinced that the monarchy had no supremacy granted by God, cut off the head of King Charles I and gave power to the parliament. It can be said that they were also the pioneers in the healthy sport of separating the body of the head of the European absolutist kings. A pity, we would have needed them in some moments of Spanish history.

Los puritanos que se quedaron en Inglaterra, poco más tarde y convencidos de que la monarquía no tenía ninguna supremacía otorgada por Dios, le cortaron la cabeza al rey Carlos I y le dieron el poder al parlamento. Se puede decir que fueron también los pioneros en el saludable deporte de separar el tronco de la cabeza de los reyes absolutistas europeos. Una pena, nos habrían venido muy bien en algunos momentos de la historia española.

WE LOVE IT! XVII CENTURY (II)

We are going to compile some audiovisual resources in an post so that you can make a quick immersion in the period before introducing our work. We do not want to make a compendium, just a small sample that can stimulate the imagination of our readers so that they can then judge if we have managed to capture something of the period we visit.

Vamos a recopilar en una entrada algunos recursos audiovisuales para que puedan hacer una inmersión rápida en el periodo antes de presentar nuestro trabajo. No queremos hacer un compendio, tan solo una pequeña muestra que pueda estimular la imaginación de nuestros lectores para que luego puedan juzgar si hemos logrado captar algo del periodo que visitamos.

"Cromwell" (1970), is one of the films that has helped us the most. Filmed in Spain, it shows the great effort to faithfully recreate the period. Few scenes of battles of this period are recorded with such accuracy in the cinema. Two samples: the battle of Edgehill and the battle of Naseby between parliamentarists and the royalists. A complete catalog of the armament and the combat techniques of the time.

“Cromwell” (1970), es una de las películas que más nos ha ayudado. Rodada en España, se nota el gran esfuerzo por recrear fielmente el periodo. Pocas escenas de batallas de este periodo están recogidas con tanta exactitud en el cine. Dos muestras: la batalla de Edgehill y la batalla de Naseby entre partidarios del parlamento y los realistas que tienen un catalogo completo del armamento y las técnicas de combate de la época.

Much more older but beatiful is "Queen Cristina of Sweden" of 1933. Some say it is one of Greta Garbo's best films. It is another cinema, which is no longer done, but with an undoubted charm. A delight, here you have a beautiful sample.

Mucho más antigua es “La reina Cristina de Suecia” de 1933. Algunos dicen que es una de las mejores películas de Greta Garbo. Es otro cine, del que ya no se hace, pero con un encanto indudable. Una delicia, de muestra un botón.

Although we have not seen the film, "The Deluge" (1974) gives us a great recreation of the army of the father of Cristina of Sweden (Gustavo II Adolfo, "The lion of the north") in the middle of the 30 years War.

Aunque no hemos visto la película, “El diluvio” (1974) nos da una estupenda recreación del ejercito del padre de Cristina de Suecia (Gustavo II Adolfo, “El león del norte”) en plena Guerra de los 30 años.

Impossible not to remenber Cyrano (1990), which is another masterpiece. Everyone remembers the scene of the defense of the mill, but we preferred to put one that is adorned with the wonderful soundtrack of the film.

Imposible no nombrar Cyrano (1990), que es otra obra de arte. Lo normal sería poner la escena de la defensa del molino, pero hemos preferido poner una que está adornada de la estupenda banda sonora de la película.

Finally, a small tribute to the 1948 version of "The Three Musketeers". No special effects are needed when you have a good script.

Por último, un pequeño guiño a la versión de “Los tres mosqueteros” de 1948. No hacen falta efectos especiales cuando se cuenta con un buen guión. 

But there are not only movies. The endless pictorial, architectural, literary and musical contribution of this period has served to "soak up the atmosphere" and take many ideas for situations and characters.

Pero no solo hay películas. La abundantísima aportación pictórica, arquitectónica, literaria y musical que tiene este periodo nos ha servido para  “empaparnos” del tema y tomar muchas ideas para situaciones y personajes. 

In particular we have appreciated the music that has accompanied us throughout the creative process and that is already part of the soundtrack of this adventure.

WE LOVE IT! XVII CENTURY

We start November with this first post of a new cycle that aims to pay homage to some chapters of the seventeenth century. Before to get down to it, we have to confess that these "modern" periods have big logistics problems on the Playmobil scale. However, we have tried to resolve it in the most dignified way possible.

Comenzamos noviembre con esta primera entrada de un ciclo que pretende hacer un homenaje a algunos capítulos del siglo XVII con pequeñas aproximaciones. Antes de meternos en harina, tenemos que confesar que estos periodos “modernos” tienen grandes problemas de logística en la escala de Playmobil. No obstante, hemos tratado de resolverlo de la manera más digna posible.

It is a period already very much worked by the collectors, which have an infinity of figures and dioramas of great quality and that include personalized accessories that are an authentic delight. We can only put a but that is that almost all the production has focused on the Spanish Tercios and their participation in the 30 & 80 Years Wars.

Se trata de un periodo muy trabajado ya por los aficionados, que cuenta con infinidad de figuras y dioramas de gran calidad y que incluyen accesorios personalizados que son una auténtica delicia. Solamente podemos poner un pero y es que casi toda la producción se ha focalizado en los Tercios españoles y su participación en las Guerras de los 80 y 30 años.

It is a bit difficult to abstract from this reality. We live in Madrid and in that period we can say that it was the capital of the known world. It is enough to take a walk through the downtown of the city to verify that what was a small medieval town becomes, artificially, the court of the kingdom and is configured as the modern European capital that today we walk on by.

Para nosotros es un poco difícil abstraernos de esta realidad. Vivimos en Madrid y en ese periodo se puede decir que era la capital del mundo conocido. Basta dar un paseo por el centro de la ciudad para comprobar que lo que era una pequeña población medieval se convierte, de forma artificial, en corte del reino y se configura como la moderna capital europea que hoy en día pisamos.

The Plaza Mayor, the Court jail, the Casón del Buen Retiro ... they are everyday buildings for us and are part of that past of splendor that Spain had and that took its last throes during the seventeenth century. It seems a joke that precisely those black slate roofs, so characteristic of Herrerian architecture, are a fashion imported from Flanders. That´s life.

La Plaza Mayor, la Cárcel de corte, el Casón del Buen Retiro…. son edificios cotidianos para nosotros y forman parte de ese pasado de esplendor que tuvo España y que daba sus últimos coletazos durante el siglo XVII. Parece una broma de mal gusto que precisamente esos tejados negros de pizarra, tan característicos de la arquitectura herreriana, sean una moda importada de Flandes. Lo que es la vida.

However, although we would want to focused more on our glorious past, we did not want to limit our adventure solely to the Spanish part, because it is only the tip of the iceberg. There are a lot of subjects in this period and they can be a source of inspiration all of them. We accompany you, by way of example, a chronological relation of ephemeris that we have extracted from Wikipedia (Spanish / English).

No obstante, y aunque el cuerpo pide centrarse más en nuestro pasado glorioso, no queríamos limitar nuestra aventura únicamente a la parte española, porque es solo la punta del  iceberg. No faltan temas que abordar en este periodo y pueden ser fuente de inspiración complementaria todos ellos. Obviously we will not touch all these topics. It would be necessary to make a monothematic blog and we would need many years of work to complete it. We have only made a few custom figures and we will have to play mainly "military" themes, although we want to find a place for others too. 

Evidentemente no vamos a tocar todos estos temas. Habría que hacer un blog monotemático y serían necesarios años de trabajo para completarlo. Nosotros solo hemos hecho unas cuantas figuras y tendremos que tocar mayoritariamente temas “castrenses”, aunque queremos buscar sitio también para otros.

The structure that we present to you will be similar to what you have already seen. An introductory post, others for the figures we have made and some other dedicated to dioramas or scenes related to the theme. Possibly it will not be a single session, because we would not want to saturate our readers. Looking for an intermediate period that could agglutinate all that, we have focused on the English Civil War (1642-1651) because it seems a parallel period to the War of 30 years but with which we could make some contribution to what has already been done and that It also allows us to jump to other moments with little effort. The advantage or disadvantage of older subjects is that there is a lot of original graphic or written documentation. For this reason we ask for leniency for the lack of rigor that we may arise.

La estructura que os presentamos será similar a lo que ya habéis visto. Una entrada introductoria, otras para la presentación de las figuras que hemos hecho y algunas dedicadas a dioramas o escenas relacionadas con el tema. Posiblemente no será una sola tanda, pues no querríamos saturar a nuestros lectores. Buscando un periodo intermedio que pudiera aglutinar todo eso, nos hemos centrado en la Guerra Civil Inglesa (1642-1651) porque nos parece un periodo paralelo a la Guerra de los 30 años pero con el que podíamos hacer alguna aportación a lo ya hecho y que además nos permite saltar a otros momentos sin apenas esfuerzo. La ventaja o el inconveniente respecto a temas más antiguos es que existe mucha documentación original gráfica o escrita. Por lo que pedimos indulgencia por las faltas de rigor que se puedan presentar.
