PLAYMOBIL DIORAMA VIKINGS THE NAVIGABLE RIVERS

At the risk of being repetitive, in this new installment we will introduce  a new Playmobil custom Viking ship. It is not that we have expanded our fleet, it is that we have given a new look to the ship that we introduce to you in the previous series of ports. We thought we could improve both the bow and the stern mask and now it seems to us that it is a good example of a dragon-headed Viking ship. The technique that has been used is that of putty. It may seem like a lot of work, but it really involves spending a little time each day. We believe it is worth it. The head belongs to the catapult of reference 9243 and we think that it is more proportionate than the previous one (9245).

A riesgo de resultar repetitivos, en esta nueva entrega os vamos a presentar un nuevo barco vikingo. No es que hayamos ampliado nuestra flota, es que le hemos dado un nuevo aspecto al barco que os presentamos en la anterior serie de los puertos. Creíamos que podíamos mejorar tanto el mascarón de proa como el de popa y ahora nos parece que es un buen ejemplo de barco vikingo con cabeza de dragón. La técnica que se ha utilizado es la de la masilla. Puede parecer mucho trabajo, pero realmente consiste en dedicarle un pequeño rato cada día. Creemos que merece la pena. La cabeza pertenece a la catapulta de la referencia 9243 y pensamos que está más proporcionada que la anterior (9245).

We have dared to paint it, to highlight some details such as scales or metal finishes that we have added. We still have a lot to learn, but we are very proud of the result of this "Viking dragon." It would have been good if Playmobil had taken them out, but that is the cause we are make it (with all the fun it has).

Nos hemos atrevido a pintarla, para resaltar algunos detalles como las escamas o los remates de metal que le hemos añadido. Tenemos mucho que aprender todavía, pero estamos muy orgullosos del resultado de este “dragón vikingo”. Habría estado bien que los hubiera sacado Playmobil, pero no hay mal que por bien no venga y los estamos haciendo nosotros (con toda la diversión que tiene).

Another relevant new detail is the shield. We had already done with some shields of Play Big, but they are difficult to achieve without having to buy many other things that do not interest us. So we made a mold like the hoplite shield, but with the peculiarity that we also added an original Playmobil shield to make it compatible. A hand of paint and the result is bombproof, in addition to giving the boat a unique touch. We liked the sail very much, so we put the rhombuses on both sides and we kept it.

We needed to add the crew, which is a gang of figures from various eras. There are news that we have added as a conical helmet or bodies that are also the product of our experimentation with molds and putty. It is an exploration expedition that is prepared for both trade, looting and war. We have included a berserker to which we have spray painted the bear's head and the fur cape so that they go to match.

Otro nuevo detalle relevante son los escudos. Ya nos habíamos hecho con algunos escudos de Play Big, pero son difíciles de conseguir sin tener que comprar otras muchas cosas que no nos interesan. Así que le hemos hecho un molde como al escudo de los hoplitas, pero con la peculiaridad de que también añadimos un escudo original Playmobil para hacerlo compatible. Una mano de pintura y el resultado es a prueba de bombas, además de darle un toque único al barco. La vela nos gustaba mucho, así que le hemos puesto los rombos por ambos lados y la hemos mantenido.

Nos faltaba añadirle la tripulación, que es un refrito de figuras de varias épocas. Hay novedades que hemos añadido como algún casco cónico o cuerpos que también son producto de nuestra experimentación con los moldes y la masilla. Se trata de una expedición de exploración que está preparada tanto para el comercio, como el saqueo y la guerra. Hemos incluido un berserker al que le hemos pintado con spray la cabeza de oso y la capa de piel para que vayan a juego.

As for the diorama, the challenge was to make two riversides and a navigable river. We wanted to get the effect that it could have to look out at the edge of a river and see that dragon head furrowing the waters and slowly approaching. We know that it was like that in many places in Europe during a time we are passionate about. Again the blue of our shower curtain makes a difference, giving a pretty good result for the effect of water.

En cuanto al diorama, el reto consistía en hacer dos orillas y un rio navegable. Queríamos conseguir el efecto que podría tener asomarse a la orilla de un río y ver esa cabeza de dragón surcando las aguas y aproximándose lentamente. Sabemos que fue así en muchos lugares de Europa durante una época que nos apasiona. De nuevo el azul de nuestra cortina de ducha marca la diferencia, dando un resultado bastante bueno para el efecto del agua.

We also leave you some photos with decoration tests to see effects and depths. Although the star of the entrance may be the ship, in reality the scene was the most important. Try the different possibilities of the river, which can be used for many other scenes of Europe and North America.

PLAYMOBIL DIORAMA DANELAW VIKINGS IN ENGLAND

We start here a series of four posts on the Viking theme. They do not add much new stuff, but we took the opportunity to share some experiments that we had pending in our list of projects.

Empezamos aquí una serie de cuatro entradas sobre el tema vikingo. No tienen grandes novedades, pero aprovechamos para compartir algunos experimentos que teníamos pendientes en nuestra lista de proyectos. 

In the first post, we try again a new version of a Viking settlement. It is a village on the mainland, we think it may well be in England at the time when it was partially occupied by the Vikings and those lands were known as Danelaw.

En la primera, volvemos a intentar una nueva versión de asentamiento vikingo. Se trata de un poblado en tierra firme, pensamos que bien puede estar en Inglaterra en la época en la que estaba parcialmente ocupada por los vikingos y aquéllas tierras eran conocidas como Danelaw.

The main idea of ​​the diorama is to create a scene with the settlement as the center, but including a river with a wooden bridge. We were looking for a way to make a mini bridge type "Stamford Bridge" and that could be easily integrated into the terrain, with the added difficulty of having a ford that is real and not figured as in other dioramas that we had made before. Thus we play with different heights, backgrounds, and textures to get the scene more real.

La idea general del diorama es crear una escena con el asentamiento como centro, pero incluyendo un río con un puente de madera. Estábamos buscando la forma de hacer un puente tipo “Stamford Bridge” y que pudiera integrarse fácilmente en el terreno, con la dificultad añadida de tener un vado que es real y no figurado como en otros montajes que habíamos hecho con anterioridad. Así jugamos con diferentes alturas, fondos y texturas para dar a la escena más realismo. 

As for the settlement, it is quite simple in its approach. It incorporates as a novelty the low palisade and the towers using the angled pieces of reference 3151. It is the main house, which has several annexed buildings and a small palisade for its defense. There we can see the different people of the society of the time: slaves who are dedicated to agricultural and pastoral tasks, Warlords who ride horses through their domains, passing monks seeking refuge where to spend the night, villagers of the area that come to trade and warriors under the protection of their lord.

En cuanto al asentamiento, es bastante sencillo en su planteamiento. Incorpora como novedad la empalizada baja y las torres utilizando las piezas de remate en ángulo de la referencia 3151. Se trata de una casa principal, que cuenta con varios edificios anexos y una pequeña empalizada para su defensa. Allí podemos ver los diferentes estratos de la sociedad de la época: esclavos que se dedican a las tareas agrícolas y de pastoreo, señores que pasean en caballo por sus dominios, monjes de paso que buscan refugio donde pasar la noche, habitantes de la zona que vienen a comerciar y guerreros bajo la protección de su señor. 

We are very happy with the bridge, which we have made using the wooden pieces of reference 4826. The biggest problem may be in those bases full of “holes”. But we can live with it. The river is made with a shower curtain (100% nylon) bought in a one-dollar shop and that you will see in many of our dioramas from now on.

Estamos muy contentos con el puente, que hemos hecho con SystemX, recurriendo a las piezas de madera de la referencia 4826. Puede que el problema mayor esté en esas bases llenas de “agujeros”. Pero podemos vivir con ello. El río está hecho con un cortina de ducha (100% nailon) comprada en un bazar y que vais a ver en bastantes de nuestros montajes a partir de ahora.

PLAYMOBIL CUSTOM ANCIENT GREEK CHARACTERS (III) SOLDIERS

To expand our hoplites warriors was our initial objective, which, as we will see, has become an accessory subject within the global project. Although there are many pieces available in both 3D and resin, we wanted to make our own army, as faithful as possible to the previous Greek gang that we made with the figure of the 11 series. The appearance of Ares in the new series of Greek Gods, It was an opportunity, but we saw that it would be impossible to undertake the project at the original box price. But luck was on our side, on the one hand we found several figures at 1.5 euros and on the other we got  
the helmets through the DS. With that, we could start.

Ampliar nuestros hoplitas era el objetivo inicial, que como iremos viendo se ha convertido en algo accesorio dentro del proyecto global. Aunque hay muchas piezas disponibles tanto en 3D como en resina, queríamos hacer nuestra propia tropa, lo más fiel posible a la anterior hornada que hicimos con la figura de la serie 11. La aparición de la figura de Ares en la serie de dioses griegos, era una oportunidad, pero veíamos que por precio iba ser imposible acometer el proyecto. Pero la suerte estaba de nuestro lado, por un lado encontramos varias figuras a 1,5 euros y por otro conseguimos los cascos a través del DS. Con eso ya podíamos empezar.

First problem that we had to solve was the shields. Playmobil had given a solution that did not convince us and we needed to solve with something that we liked. Play Big knight shields were the answer, but they are also hard to find. In addition, we were going to need some more for the ship we needed if we wanted to make the Odyssey dioramas.

Un tema que teníamos que solucionar era el de los escudos. Playmobil había dado una solución que no nos convencía y necesitábamos resolver con algo que fuera de nuestro agrado. Los escudos de Play Big eran la respuesta, pero también son difíciles de conseguir.  Además, íbamos a necesitar algunos más para el barco que necesitábamos si queríamos hacer los dioramas de la Odisea.

We had the opportunity to make a mold. We had several pieces to clone, we had found another distributor of silicones and we thought it was good to try. As the resin is fragile and gives us problems over time, we have added an original shield to each piece from behind.

Nos quedaba el recurso de hacer un molde. Teníamos varias piezas para clonar, habíamos encontrado otro distribuidor de siliconas y nos pareció bien probar. Como la resina es frágil y nos da problemas con el tiempo, hemos añadido un escudo original a cada pieza por detrás. 

That way, in addition to making the clip compatible, it becomes a piece almost impossible to break and 100% playable. It may seem a bit rough but we like the result. So that they could be compatible with the copper of the helmets and the breasts, we subjected them to a hand of paint (bazaar spray), a wash in dark brown paint and a matt varnish coat. The mold has some defects, but it has the reward of knowing that the whole process is made by us 100%.

De esa forma, además de compatibilizar el agarre, se convierte en una pieza casi imposible de romper y 100% jugable. Puede parecer un poco basto pero a nosotros nos gusta el resultado. Para que pudieran ser compatibles con el cobre de los cascos y de los pechos los sometimos a una mano de pintura (spray de bazar), un lavado en marrón oscuro y un barnizado mate. El molde tiene algún defecto, pero tiene la recompensa de saber que todo el proceso está hecho 100% por nosotros.

You have to keep in mind that the Greek helmets of Playmobil are inspired in the classical period (relatively modern) and that the Trojan War is located in the twelfth century BC. So it is certain that our figures have no historical accurathy. As the Trojan conquest expedition was made up of several kings and armies, our "Achaeans" have different shades and colors. We have played with feathers and coats to give variety. You can see some combinations with the pieces of the new Playmobil film figures and some hand painted like the black feather.

Hay que tener en cuenta que los cascos griegos de Playmobil son del periodo clásico (relativamente modernos) y que la guerra de Troya se ubica en el siglo XII a.c. por lo que es seguro que nuestras figuras no tienen ninguna precisión histórica. Como la expedición de conquista de Troya estaba formada por varios reyes y ejércitos, nuestros "aqueos" tienen diferentes tonos y colores. Hemos jugado con las plumas y las capas para dar variedad. Podéis ver alguna combinación con las  piezas de los sobres de la película o alguna pintada como la negra.

A custom chariot can be one of our pending subjects, but it will have to be for another future occasion. To the Hoplites warriors that we introduce to you in another previous post we have made a review by painting the shields again and changing some piece.

Un carro personalizado puede ser una de las asignaturas pendientes, pero tendrá que ser para otra ocasión. A los hoplitas que os presentamos en otra entrada anterior les hemos hecho un repaso pintando de nuevo los escudos y cambiando alguna pieza.
