WE LOVE IT! THE NIBELUNGS

One of the subjects that we would have liked to do in its entirety is that of The Nibelungs. The Song of the Nibelungs is a medieval epic poem that tells the story of Siegfried. Later, Richard Wagner developed the opera tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen ("The Ring of the Nibelungs"). The story was also taken to the movies. Although the most recognized version is Fritz Lang from 1924, there is another later version also in two parts from 1965 and 1966 that is much easier to see. In them, you can discover a very young Terence Hill as a secondary actor.

Uno de los temas que habríamos querido hacer en toda su extensión es el de Los Nibelungos.  El cantar de los Nibelungos es un poema épico medieval que narra la gesta de Sigfrido. Sobre éste, Richard Wagner desarrolló posteriormente la tetralogía operística Der Ring des Nibelungen ("El anillo del nibelungo"). La historia también fue llevada al cine. Aunque la versión más reconocida es de Fritz Lang de 1924, existe otra versión posterior también en dos partes de 1965 y 1966 que es mucho más fácil de ver. En ellas podréis descubrir a un jovencísimo Terence Hill haciendo de secundario.

The story is set very close to the fall of the Roman Empire but has much influence of the Viking aesthetic in its different versions, very contaminated by the Romantic vision that the theme had during the nineteenth century. The plot is exciting: dragons, dwarves, treasures, kings, princesses, intrigues, betrayal ... the Huns !. We do not want to spoil it for those who do not know it. In addition, it has a historical connection with Arminius and the battle of the forest of Teutoburg. There are historians who maintain that "The Song of the Nibelungs" is, in fact, a deformed story of a real historical fact. Arminius would be Siegfried, the dragon was the great Roman army snaking through Germania and the treasure was the spoils of war resulting from the battle (swords, helmets, animals ...). All of it, properly decorated and after hundreds of years of verbal narrations gave rise to the legend of the Nibelungs. We love this theory.

La historia está ambientada muy cerca de la caída del imperio romano, pero tiene mucha influencia de la estética vikinga en sus diferentes versiones, muy contaminada por la visión romántica que el tema tuvo durante el siglo XIX. La trama es apasionante: dragones, enanos, tesoros, reyes, princesas, intrigas, traiciones…¡los hunos!. No queremos estropearla para aquellos que no la conozcan. Además tiene una conexión histórica con el caudillo querusco Arminio y la batalla del bosque de Teutoburgo. Hay historiadores que mantienen que "El Cantar de los Nibelungos" es en realidad un relato deformado de un hecho histórico real. Arminio sería Sigfrido, el dragón es el gran ejército romano serpenteando por Germania y el tesoro es el botín de guerra resultado de la batalla (espadas, cascos, animales…). Todo ello, debidamente adornado y tras cientos de años de narraciones verbales dio lugar a la leyenda de los nibelungos. Nos encanta esta teoría.

We would have liked to make several dioramas with the different scenes, but we will not make them (at least for the moment): Hagen Von Tronje, Siegfried, Krimilda, Brunilda, Gunther from Burgundia. We have tried with some characters that we introduce to you in this post. To recreate them we also had to do some experiment with epoxy putty. We show them below with a small accompanying commentary.

Nos habría gustado hacer varios dioramas con las diferentes escenas, pero no llegaremos a hacerlas (al menos por el momento): Hagen Von Tronje, Sigfrido, Krimilda, Brunilda, Gunther de Burgundia. Hemos probado con algunos personajes  que os traemos en esta entrada. Para recrearlos también hemos tenido que hacer algún experimento con masilla. Os los presentamos a continuación con un pequeño comentario de acompañamiento.

Hagen Von Tronje. He is the bad guy in the movie. As counselor to King Gunther of Burgundy, he is in charge of arranging everything for the drama to take place. The characteristic helmet with wings we tried to recreate on the 1924 version.

Hagen Von Tronje. Es el malo de la película. Como consejero del rey Gunther de Burgundia se encarga de liarlo todo para que el drama tenga lugar. El característico casco con alas lo hemos intentado recrear sobre la versión de 1924.

For Siegfried, we have made two versions. The one of the first part of the story, that narrates its fight against the dragon and the discovery of the treasure of the Nibelungs.

Para Sigfrido hemos hecho dos versiones. La de la primera parte de la historia, que narra su lucha contra el dragón y el descubrimiento del tesoro de los nibelungos.

And a later one in which our character is already Prince Siegfried, husband of King Gunther's sister, Princess Krimilda. We have represented the death of Siegfried (spoiler !!!) at the hands of Hagen Von Tronje.

Y otra posterior en la que nuestro personaje es ya el príncipe Sigfrido, esposo de la hermana del rey Gunther, la princesa Krimilda. Hemos representado la muerte de Sigfrido (spoiler!!!) a manos de Hagen Von Tronje.

There are also war queens in history, like Brunilda, that we have chosen to recreate the stupendous aesthetics of the 1966 film using a figure from the Ghostbusters series.

También hay reinas guerreras en la historia, como Brunilda, que nosotros hemos optado por recrear la estupendaestética de la película de 1966 utilizando una figura de la serie de Los Cazafantasmas.

Siegfried dies in the first part but will give rise to a second: the revenge of Krimilda, while we let his body be picked up by the Valkyries.

Sigfrido muere en la primera parte, pero dará lugar a una segunda: la venganza de Krimilda, mientras dejaremos que su cuerpo sea recogido por las valquirias. 

A subject that has been exciting for us and that we hope will be of your interest.

Un tema que nos ha resultado apasionante y que esperamos sea también de vuestro interés.

PLAYMOBIL CUSTOM CELTIC CHARIOT (II)

Our adventure with the epoxy putty is being very productive this year. As they were experiments that we did not know very well how they would end, we ventured on several fronts. We had previously tried a version of a Gallic chariot that we introduced in another post and we wanted to make a more sophisticated version without to make a complicated work. The pieces that we have used are all available in the DS and correspond mainly to the Egyptian chariot. For the base and the sides, we have used as pieces the new wooden cage of the Super 4 (ref 9006). For the effect of the wicker, we have resorted to a plastic tablecloth of the one dollar shop.

Nuestra aventura este año con la masilla está siendo muy productiva. Como eran experimentos que no sabíamos muy bien cómo terminarían, nos aventuramos en varios frentes. Habíamos probado anteriormente con una versión de carro galo que ya os presentamos en otra entrada y queríamos hacer una versión más sofisticada sin tener que complicarnos mucho la vida. Las piezas que hemos utilizado están todas disponibles en el DS y corresponden principalmente al carro egipcio. Para la base y los laterales hemos utilizado como piezas la nueva jaula de madera de los Super 4 (ref. 9006). Para el efecto del mimbre hemos recurrido a un mantel de plástico de los chinos (1 euro).  

The final appearance we have homogenized with a light brown coat of paint for the structure and dark brown for the saddles. We have changed the paint to one that we believe has a much better finish than Montana 94. It is the brand MOLOTOW, which are available in this direction.

El aspecto final lo hemos homogeneizado con una mano de pintura marrón claro para la estructura y marrón oscuro para las monturas. Hemos cambiado de pintura a una que creemos que tiene mucho mejor acabado que las de Montana 94. Se trata de la marca MOLOTOW, que están disponibles en esta dirección. 

The result seems good, is fully playable, and allows us to have a unique piece in a very affordable way. I think it could be improved a lot with something more practice.

El resultado final nos parece bueno, es totalmente jugable, y nos permite tener una pieza singular de una manera muy asequible. Creo que se podría mejorar bastante con algo más de práctica.

For this occasion, we have chosen to accompany it to our personalization of Queen Boudica, who wears a Playstickers shield. The driver of the chariot wears a custom helmet also with putty and a little sandpaper.

Para esta ocasión, hemos elegido para acompañarlo a nuestra personalización de Boudica, que lleva un escudo de Playstickers. El conductor del carro lleva un casco personalizado también con masilla y un poco de lija.

PLAYMOBIL CUSTOM THE LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITION

Within the expeditions of exploration of the American West Frontier, the most famous could be the Lewis and Clark one of 1804. It is a crazy thing, something like a handful of Napoleonic soldiers in the middle of the Northwest frontier for two years. Can there be a better plan to customize? The period of the Napoleonic wars is a period that we did not "want" to deal with. Too much work, too many missing pieces, too big for us... but in this case, the effort is small and with a very big reward.

Dentro de las expediciones de exploración del Oeste americano, la más famosa podría ser la de Lewis y Clark de 1804. Que es una cosa loca, algo así como un puñado de soldados napoleónicos en medio del Oeste durante dos años. ¿Puede haber mejor plan para personalizar? El periodo de las guerras napoléonicas es un periodo que no “queríamos” tratar. Demasiado trabajo, demasiadas piezas que faltan, demasiado grande para nosotros... pero en este caso el esfuerzo es pequeño y la recompensa muy grande.

After the purchase of Louisiana by the United States to France in 1803, an expedition was raised that tried to arrive from the east coast to the west coast of the continent using navigable rivers. After many adventures, they reached the West Coast at the end of 1805 where they spent the winter and from where they began their return to the starting point.

Tras la compra de Lousiana por parte de los Estados Unidos a Francia en 1803, se planteó un expedición que trataba de llegar desde la coste este a la costa oeste del continente utilizando los ríos navegables. Tras múltiples aventuras alcanzaron la costa oeste a finales de 1805 donde pasaron el invierno y  desde donde comenzaron su regreso al punto de partida.

Toussaint Charbonneau, French Canadian trapper; he served as a interpreter and often as an expedition cooker. Trampero franco canadiense; sirvió como traductor y a menudo de cocinero de la expedición.

Captain Meriwether Lewis, private secretary to President Thomas Jefferson and leader of the expedition. Secretario privado del presidente Thomas Jefferson y líder de la expedición.

"Seaman", the great black dog of Lewis. El gran perro negro de Lewis de raza Terranova.

Sacagawea, wife of Charbonneau; She translated Shoshone for Charbonneau and was a highly valued member of the expedition as an interpreter. Esposa de Charbonneau; traducía Shoshone para Charbonneau y era un miembro muy valorado de la expedición como interprete.

Lieutenant William Clark, he shared the leadership of the expedition, although he was second in the line of command. Compartió la jefatura de la expedición, a pesar que era el segundo en la línea de mando. 

And we have not forgotten about York, the black slave servant of Clark who accompanied them throughout the expedition.  Y tampoco nos hemos olvidado de York, el esclavo negro sirviente de Clark que les acompañó durante toda la expedición.

Finally, a small scene of what could be one of the camps on the banks of some of the navigable rivers that they passed through. I know we did not make the boat, it may be another time.

Por último, una pequeña escena de lo que pudo ser alguno de los campamentos a orillas de algunos de los ríos navegables por los que pasaron. Ya sé que nos ha faltado el barco, puede que sea en otra ocasión.

PLAYMOBIL CUSTOM NORTHWEST FRONTIER

The colonial expansion in North America has not been one of our most worked subjects in the blog. Almost all the figures that we have been made have been custom figures that we got in the flea market. Most of the pieces that Playmobil has available are related to the Western theme, but it must be recognized that many of the pieces can be used in other themes. The palisades of its forts (in its three versions) have been for us a resource for constructions and dioramas: from the Romans to the pirates, through the Vikings, the Gauls ... Another interesting contribution has been that of the wild animals: bison, vultures, bears, moose ... great contributions to improve other issues such as prehistory. Without forgetting the horses that have given us so much game in all their versions. We have no complaint.

La expasión colonial en Norteamérica no ha sido uno de nuestros temas más trabajados en el blog. Casi todas las figuras que hemos ido consiguiendo han sido personalizaciones de figuras de mercadillo. La mayoría de las piezas que Playmobil tiene disponibles tienen relación con el Western, pero hay que reconocer que muchas de las piezas se pueden utilizar en otras temáticas. Las empalizadas de sus fuertes (en sus tres versiones) han sido para nosotros un bálsamo para construcciones y escenarios: desde los romanos hasta los piratas, pasando por los vikingos, los galos… Otra contribución interesante ha sido la de los animales: bisontes, buitres, osos, alces… estupenda aportación para mejorar otras temáticas, como la de la prehistoria. Sin olvidar a los caballos que tanto juego nos han dado en todas sus versiones. No tenemos queja.

But something is missing ... and that is the difficulty of bringing those Indians to the period before the Western, as the Seven Years War or the arrival of the first settlers. My wish would be to see "a solution" for the Mohawk hair in the next few years ... in the monk's tonsure style. I believe it is possible.

Pero algo teníamos que echar en falta… y es que la dificultad de llevar esos indios al periodo anterior al Western, como La Guerra de los Siete Años o la llegada de los primeros colonos. Mi deseo sería ver “una solución” para la cabellera Mohawk en los próximos años… tipo la tonsura del monje. Imposible no es.

While that arrives, or not, we have used some resources to pay tribute to the explorers of the American Northwest. A mixture of tomahawk, muskets, and tricorns in equal parts. We reach this point when many others have passed, and we dedicate our review to them.

Mientras eso llega, o no, hemos aprovechado algunos recursos para dar un homenaje a los exploradores del Noroeste americano. Una mezcla de tomahawk, mosquetes y tricornios a partes iguales. Llegamos a este punto cuando muchos otros han pasado, y a ellos les dedicamos nuestra revisión.
