PLAYMOBIL DIORAMA CRUSADERS

Our readers have to forgive if today's post fails to meet the expectation that could had created. We can not offer a battle because a lack of troops (especially horses), although we take good note to make some small combat scene in the future.

Nos tendrá que perdonar alguno de los nuestros lectores si la entrada de hoy no logra satisfacer la expectativa que tenía creada. No podremos ofrecer una batalla por falta de efectivos (sobre todo monturas), aunque tomamos buena nota para hacer en el futuro alguna pequeña escena de combate.

At least we can offer the castle. The main objective that we had with our diorama of Crusaders of Playmobil was to make a construction that remembered those great strengths that are still standing in the area and that have that "Norman" touch that we like so much. In the end it was a way to continue expanding our buildings catalog. Again we had to resort to the Steck to get our castle made. Taking advantage of the rocks of references 3665 and 3841 as a base, we have been adding heights on a central square tower. It is one of our highest constructions (fully playable from behind) and we are quite proud of the result.

Al menos el castillo sí se lo podemos ofrecer. El objetivo principal que teníamos con nuestro diorama de Cruzados de Playmobil era hacer una construcción  que recordara a esas grandes fortalezas que aún están en pie en la zona y que tienen ese toque “normando” que tanto nos gusta. Al final era una forma de seguir ampliando nuestro catálogo. Nuevamente hemos tenido que recurrir al Steck para conseguir nuestro castillo cruzado. Aprovechando la rocas de la referencias 3665 y 3841 como base, hemos ido añadiendo alturas sobre una torre cuadrada central. Es una de nuestras construcciones más altas (totalmente jugable por detrás) y estamos bastante orgullosos del resultado.

We did not have too many accessories to expand the scene (we would have loved to be able to do a small village), so we resorted to a small oasis with a well that supplies both the fortress and the villagers of the area. To break the symmetry in the diorama, we have added a small rocky area on the side and we have "lengthened" our palm trees a bit.

No teníamos demasiados accesorios para ampliar la escena (nos habría encantado poder hacer esa aldea), así que hemos recurrido a un pequeño oasis con un pozo que abastece tanto a la fortaleza como a los residentes de la zona. Para romper la simetría en el diorama, hemos añadido una pequeña zona rocosa en el lateral y hemos “alargado” nuestras palmeras un poco. 

Combining the pieces you can make small scenes that help create a certain context on the subject.

Combinando las piezas se pueden hacer pequeñas estampas que ayuden a crear cierto contexto sobre el tema.

We are looking for other options that allow us to maintain different heights to get a sense of deep in the dioramas. Finally we use an option as cheap as using the mats and cushions that we have on the terrace. It also has the advantage of being a very versatile solution, as we will see in other dioramas. Since nothing is perfect, you have the problem that the fabric makes many wrinkles and creases.

Estamos buscando otras opciones que nos permitan mantener diferentes alturas para conseguir una sensación de relieve real en los dioramas. Al final nos sirve una opción tan barata como es usar las colchonetas y cojines que tenemos en la terraza. Además tiene la ventaja de ser una solución muy versátil, como iremos viendo en otros montajes. Como nada es perfecto, tiene el problema de que la tela hace muchas arrugas y pliegues.

As you can see, there are three very similar scenes, each with one of the military orders, which served us to experiment with the different elements that compose them.

Como podéis ver son tres escenas muy similares, cada una con una de las ordenes militares, que nos sirvieron para experimentar con los diferentes elementos que las componen.

Lately, and with our new Playstickers shields, we did the assembly of the boat. One of our wishes was to place them on the sides of the boat hull, which gives another "life" to our Norman ship. We have used again our cushion to make that steep coast.

Con posterioridad, y ya con nuestros nuevos escudos de Playstickers, hicimos el montaje del barco. Uno de nuestros deseos era poder colocarlos en los laterales del casco, lo que le da otra “vida” a nuestro barco normando. Hemos recurrido a los cojines para hacer esa costa escarpada. 

The subject has no endless, and we have another diorama (which connects these two scenes), with which we think to close the cycle for the moment. We hope you like them.

El tema da para mucho más, y nos queda otro montaje en la recamara (que conecta estas dos escenas), con el que pensamos que quedará el ciclo cerrado por el momento. Esperamos que os gusten.

PLAYMOBIL CUSTOM CRUSADERS

The custom crusaders knights of Playmobil that we introduce to you in this post are made from the original pieces. Later, and we are still improving it, we have been adding accessories that we think that make our figures better. You could see that in our last post, the first photo clearly showed those changes. We have used helmets from Cowabounga 3D printing that took time at home without giving them use and some great Playstickers that Javier made us last Christmas for the Egyptian shields. Both versions of the figures seem very interesting options, although at the entrance you will only find photos with the original pieces.

Los caballeros cruzados personalizados de Playmobil que os presentamos en esta entrada están hechos a partir de las piezas originales de la marca. Posteriormente, y aún estamos en ello, se le han ido añadiendo accesorios que pensamos que mejoran las figuras. En la entrada anterior, la primera foto mostraba claramente esos cambios. Hemos empleado unos cascos de Cowabounga de impresión 3D que llevaban tiempo por casa sin darles uso y unas estupendas pegatinas de Playstickers que nos hizo Javier las pasadas navidades para los escudos egipcios. Ambas versiones de las figuras nos parecen opciones bastante interesantes, aunque en la entrada solo encontraréis fotos con la piezas originales.

We have grouped the photographs in the three heraldic ones that we have and you can verify that the combinations are quite simple. Using all the time the same colors: white, black, silver and red, depending on the case. The skirts and cloaks, as differentiating elements for some of our knights, make it easy for us to have a certain variety in the figures.

Hemos agrupado las fotografías en las tres heráldicas  que tenemos y podéis comprobar que las combinaciones son bastante sencillas. Jugando todo el tiempo con el blanco, el negro, el plata y el rojo, según los casos. Las faldas y las capas como elementos diferenciadores para algunos de nuestros caballeros nos facilitan la tarea de tener cierta variedad en las figuras.

We are quite happy with the result and we hope that you also find it interesting. In the next post you will see how we have integrated them into a diorama.

WE LOVE IT! CRUSADERS

The Crusades are a subject that we wanted to visit at some point on our path through our blog. Although we have already presented some figure sporadically within our customizations of Playmobil, we had not been able to address the issue until now due to lack of sufficient fellows among "our troops".

Las Cruzadas son un tema al que queríamos llegar en algún momento de nuestro camino por el blog. Aunque ya hemos presentado alguna figura de forma esporádica dentro de nuestras personalizaciones de Playmobil, no habíamos podido tratar el tema hasta ahora por falta de suficientes efectivos entre “nuestras filas”.

We enjoy greatly making our Saracens and we are still reviewing and incorporating a character from time to time. It was at the end of summer of last year when we were able to get hold of the pieces we were looking forward to completing our crusaders.

Disfrutamos enormemente haciendo nuestros sarracenos y aún seguimos revisando e incorporando algún personaje de vez en cuando. Fue al final del verano del año pasado cuando pudimos hacernos con las piezas que estábamos deseando para completar a nuestros cruzados.

It might seem that we are going to dedicate our post to the Saracens again, but in reality we are going to dedicate ourselves to the "Frany" (French or Franks, a term that the Saracens called the European invaders). We had the idea to expand in some way the Playmobil references and make a small troop for our adventures. We hope that Playmobil continues to update this topic periodically. In this way we have been gradually collecting figures and pieces to be able to get down to work.

Pudiera parecer que vamos a volver a dedicar nuestras entradas a los sarracenos, pero en realidad nos vamos a dedicar a los “frany” (francos o franceses, término con el que los árabes denominaban a los invasores europeos). La idea que teníamos era la ampliar de alguna forma las referencias que había sacado Playmobil y hacernos una pequeña tropa para nuestras aventuras. Esperamos que Playmobil siga actualizando periódicamente este tema. De esta forma hemos ido recopilando poco a poco figuras y piezas hasta poder estar en condiciones de ponernos manos a la obra.

With more than one year working, we plan to make three posts on the subject: We love it! Crusaders (which we introduce to you today as an introduction and recommending something for those of our readers who wish to deepen), Playmobil Custom Crusaders (with a compilation of our customizations) and a final post: Playmobil Diorama Crusaders. We leave one last post for another monographic series that we are preparing and that we hope we can have finished before the end of the year.

Con nuestro trabajo tenemos previsto hacer tres entradas sobre el tema: We love it! Crusaders (que hoy presentamos como introducción y recomendando alguna cosa para aquellos de nuestros lectores que deseen profundizar), Playmobil Custom Crusaders (con un recopilatorio de nuestras personalizaciones) y una entrada final: Playmobil Diorama Crusaders. Dejamos una última entrada para otra serie monográfica que estamos preparando y que esperamos poder tener terminada antes de final de año.

Being born in a certain place and a certain time necessarily conditions our vision of the world. We are following the natural path of the evolution of medieval Christian Europe after the Viking invasions, but there are other points of view of the subject that can also contribute to have a complete view of the historical period we visited.

El haber nacido en determinado sitio y determinada época condiciona necesariamente nuestra visión del mundo. Nosotros estamos siguiendo la senda natural de la evolución de la Europa cristiana medieval posterior a las invasiones vikingas, pero existen otros puntos de vista del tema que también pueden aportar mucho para tener una visión completa del periodo histórico que visitamos.

Thanks to my eldest son, I could read "The Crusades Through Arab Eyes" (1983) by Lebanese writer Amin Maalouf, who is best known for his novel "Leo Africanus". It is a great historical essay that gives us a very interesting view of the subject and I recommend reading to anyone who wants to delve into the subject. You can find it at a very good price (or in municipal libraries) and has different editions. The book has given me a much broader and more complete vision of what the Crusades meant and has shown me situations and facts that I did not completely know, such as the anthropophagous episode of Maarat an-Numan, the nobility and bonhomie of Saladin , or the rapid assumption of oriental culture by the Crusaders. It is also surprising to see the diversity of thought within the Islamic world of the time and the constant references to cities, so sadly present, such as Aleppo, Mosul, Homs, Damascus ...

Gracias a mi hijo mayor, ha caído en mis manos “Las cruzadas vistas por los árabes” (1983) del escritor libanés Amin Maalouf, que es más conocido por su novela “León el africano”. Se trata de un estupendo ensayo histórico que nos da una visión muy interesante del tema y que recomiendo leer a todo el que quiera profundizar en la materia. Lo podéis encontrar a muy buen precio (o en bibliotecas municipales) y cuenta con diversas ediciones. El libro me ha dado una visión mucho más amplia y completa de lo que significaron las cruzadas y me ha mostrado situaciones y hechos que desconocía totalmente, como por ejemplo el episodio antropófago de la toma de Maarat an-Numan, la nobleza y bonhomía de Saladino, o la rápida asunción de la cultura oriental por parte de los cruzados. Sorprende también comprobar la diversidad de pensamiento dentro del mundo islámico de la época y las continuas referencias a ciudades, tan de actualidad tristemente, como Alepo, Mosul, Homs, Damasco…

Another interesting reading, in this case for children (7 to 12 years old) is "Crusaders" from the Usborne publishing house. A fantastic opportunity to practice English, learn about the subject and enjoy some fantastic illustrations.

Otra lectura interesante, en este caso para el público infantil (7 a 12 años) es “Crusaders” de la editorial Usborne. Una oportunidad fantástica para practicar el inglés, aprender sobre el tema y disfrutar de unas ilustraciones fantásticas.

Our "Frany" are knights who are historically located in an intermediate period of the Crusades, but we wanted them more at the beginning than at the end of them. The first Crusader knights had a less white appearance, were really the closest thing to the Normans who participated in the battle of Hastings with a cross sewn to their clothing as a badge.

Nuestros “frany” son caballeros que están ubicados históricamente en una época intermedia de las cruzadas, pero los hemos querido más al inicio que al final de las mismas. Los primeros caballeros cruzados tenían un aspecto menos blanco, realmente eran lo más parecido a los normandos que participaron en la batalla de Hastings con alguna cruz cosida a su ropa como distintivo.

Later they went "uniforming", as the different military orders were created. At this point we are and so will be our figures.

Posteriormente se fueron “uniformando”, según se fueron creando las diferentes órdenes militares. En este punto estamos nosotros y así serán nuestras figuras.

Here we leave you sailing, sheltered from the coast, somewhere in the Middle East looking for a friendly port where they can moor your ship, while being watched closely by some Saracen warriors.

Aquí os las dejamos navegando, al abrigo de la costa, en algún punto del Oriente Próximo buscando un puerto amigo donde poder atracar su nave, mientras son vigilados atentamente por unos caballeros sarracenos.

PLAYMOBIL DIORAMA NORMANS & VIKINGS OUTTAKES (II)

It has not been easy to reach out the month of September with one weekly post in an uninterrupted rhythm. The next challenge seems even harder, although we hope to achieve it successfully. We maintain a rhythm of more than 1,000 weekly visits (with a great variety of nationalities), although only a small part of them give, through a comment (which we thank infinitely), the impression they have of our work. We will take that rhythm of constant visits as a positive fact about the acceptance of the posts that we make, or that, at least our effort generates some expectation among our parish. It is not a reproach, there are blogs with 10 times more visits with much less comments on average, I believe it is one of the main problems of the format.

No ha sido fácil llegar al mes de septiembre con un ritmo de una entrada semanal de manera ininterrumpida. El siguiente tramo parece más duro aún, aunque esperamos poder alcanzarlo con éxito. Mantenemos un ritmo de más de 1.000 visitas semanales (con una gran variedad de nacionalidades), aunque  solamente una pequeña parte de ellos traslada, mediante un comentario (lo cual agradecemos infinitamente), la impresión que tiene de nuestro trabajo. Tomaremos ese ritmo de visitas constante como un dato positivo sobre la aceptación de las entradas que preparamos, o que, al menos nuestro esfuerzo, genera cierta expectación entre nuestra parroquia. No es un reproche, hay blogs con 10 veces más visitas con muchos menos comentarios de media, es uno de los principales problemas del formato.  

We continue our journey recovering material from our vaults. Today we show you some "out takes" of our Playmobil Custom Normans. The Steck System is still our great ally and we have tried to make a construction following the standards of Norman architecture.

Seguimos nuestro camino recuperando material de nuestro disco duro. Hoy traemos otra “toma falsa” de nuestros normandos personalizados de Playmobil. El  sistema Steck sigue siendo nuestro gran aliado y hemos intentando hacer una construcción siguiendo los patrones de la arquitectura normanda.

It is a coast fortification that serves to control "maritime traffic" in their domains and be prepared for any Viking raid that they may suffer.

Se trata de una fortificación de costa que les sirve para controlar “el tráfico marítimo” en sus dominios y estar preparado para cualquier incursión vikinga que puedan sufrir.

It is a perfect excuse to try new scenes, new compositions and mix textures. The characters and accessories you already know and are placed to give a certain air of action to the photos.

Es una excusa perfecta para intentar nuevos escenarios, nuevas composiciones y  mezclar texturas. Los personajes y los accesorios ya los conocéis y están colocados para dar cierto aire de acción a las fotos.
